Premium Cruises

When it was still sailing from Boston Harbor, the Tall Ship Formidable offered a couple of premium cruise options for corporate events with boarding times reserved for 11 AM, 1 PM or 3 PM.

Tips will be requested at the end of the Morris Dance and at the end of the Mumming, as well as end of the trip.

Tall Ship Formidable Premium Cruise

Our guests will arrive and wait for the three hour sail on the boardwalk right next to the historic Boston Waterboat Marina. At the correct time, our guests board, and find a seat. The captain delivers a brief, safety announcement and the vessel leaves the dock and proceeds under power to the windward end of the harbor. The narration includes important Freedom Trail by Boston Harbor landmarks and history. Most guests start on our courtesy bottled water or ginger snaps, or whatever beverages and food they brought for themselves.

This is likely the only time our guests will be a passenger on a square-rigged vessel under sail.

Activities

  • The guests can assist in setting sails, from the deck only.
    • For insurance reasons, only deckhands can go aloft.
  • The guests can use our signal flags to create commercial messages and spell them out with our large size flag set.
  • The guests can practice some simple navigation. Each guest is handed a chart and pelorus and makes an estimate of location.
  • Each guest is given a pair of short lines and taught a dozen useful knots.
  • Our guests make navigational commands, directing the crew using a bosun’s whistle.

Morris Dancing

Two of our crew will be performing some simple Morris dancing, including the knee pads with bells, and some longsword work, along with some authentic recorded Morris and Longsword music from England. Passengers will have an opportunity to try out some brief routines with some safe longswords.

Mumming

We will have some special hats for mumming done by the crew and then some guests.

A three hour narrated tour ends at the leeward end of the harbor and Formidable returns to the dock.

Harbor Battle

Our guests will be asked to design a script that will help with the ambush. The guests will need to make decisions about the vessels speed and movements, and will pass the instructions to our Captain who will consider them if they are safe. Then our guests will need to use the Bosun’s whistle to make sail commands. Each activity will be graded by the captain. Winning vessel’s crew receives a plaque.

The vessels will reenact a brief military skirmish. One vessel will send signal flag messages of friendship to the victim, the other vessel responds until it discovers that the intention of the first vessel is an ambush. A battle begins, complete with cannons firing very loud blank shells.

A three hour narrated tour ends at the leeward end of the harbor and Formidable and Poincare return to the dock.
