Tall Ship Formidable

Welcome to the Tall Ship Formidable Intern page!

In 2008, we are only using employees, no interns.

Tall Ship Formidable Internship Program

Internships are available on Tall Ship Formidable. Interns will be employees of Willow Farm, Inc. and, for the duration of the course, will work six days a week, 10 hours a day, with a few additional hours for study.

Modest English fluency required. You must be 16 years old, and pass a USCG test for illegal drugs. We provide the test at our expense.Formidable is not wheelchair accessible at this time.

Interns maintain and manage the operation of Tall Ship Formidable, taking passengers out on two hour sailing excursions, under the supervision of our Captain. Interns need to find their own living quarters and provide their own food. They receive a stipend of $60 per working day. Interns are expected to bring their own foul weather gear, boots, sweaters, and all other necessities. We do not offer health insurance. The expected uniform that interns must provide, is a navy collared t-shirt, tan or khaki shorts, and suitable deck shoes or sneakers. Passengers may tip generously, so interns with initiative could easily cover their own expenses. At the conclusion of the course, each intern may receive a letter of completion, signed by the instructors, and including samples of the students work and a complete description of the course. Please send us an e-mail at kwillcox@shore.net or fax 978-468-1954 to sign up.

Expectations – each intern will perform duties necessary to operate and manage our sailing program. The Tall Ship Formidable takes 49 day passengers out for two hour harbor tours, four times daily. The sails are hoisted and doused every sail so there is plenty of sail handling experience, very little rough weather experience. Before each work day, each intern should expect to spend 2 hours on ship maintenance, cleaning, painting, cooking, and another two hours on homework, so the days are hard, but the work is pleasant. The captain’s sole job is to operate the vessel and issue such instructions as are required to operate the vessel. His word is law. Although he will be glad to help with interns’ coursework, he is not the instructor. Assignments in reading and written answers to problem sets are submitted to the Willow Farm, Inc. by e-mail and answers are by return e-mail. At the conclusion of the course, each intern may receive a letter of completion, signed by the instructors, and including samples of the students work and a complete description of the course
